Princess Way Public Realm
A recent investment of £1million in the public realm within the Knowledge Quarter has created a modern gateway to Burnley, representative of the outstanding new facilities on offer at the Burnley Education Campus. Future plans for the adjacent Knowledge Park will be of an equivalent iconic standard.
The public realm transformations took place during 2011 and incorporated the latest architectural and artist design features with the creation of a new public space, paved public walkways, street furniture, landscaping, public art and improved lighting, including the colour splash lighting of the magnificent viaduct.
Gateway to Burnley’s Future
The modern gateway signifies the ‘new’ Burnley and maximises the development of the town and the Knowledge Quarter, helping to attract wider investment from new businesses and visitors alike. By creating a brighter modern image, and improving the appearance, feel and perception of the whole area between the education campus, Burnley Central Station, and the town centre, the Knowledge Quarter will become the destination of choice.
Key features of the £1m gateway transformation include :
- creation of a modern environment befitting of the design and visual impact of the iconic College and University campus
- creation of a large, high quality area for students to meet and relax
- colour upgrade of the railway viaduct lighting
- creation of clear pedestrian and cycle routes
- installation of public art ‘Rain Bow Gate’
- quality lighting, paving and street furniture
- creation of a safe route for daytime and evening users between the campus, Canning Street and the Town Centre
