Primark opening in Burnley in 2017

Primark is coming to Burnley

Burnley Council has welcomed the announcement that Primark is establishing a new store in Burnley town centre.

Politicians and town hall officials have worked closely with Addington Capital on the deal, which will bring the popular clothes retailer to Charter Walk Shopping Centre.

The new Primark store will be on Curzon Street, next door to Next, in space which is currently occupied by Wilko.

Wilko is fully committed to staying in Burnley, and has taken out a ten-year lease which will see the business relocate to 24 The Mall. This space is currently occupied by Poundland (former 99p store).

Poundland, which currently has two stores, will also maintain its town centre presence, and consolidate into its existing unit in Market Square.

Council leader Mark Townsend said: “We are delighted that a leading retailer such as Primark is coming to Burnley as well as securing further long term commitments to the town from Wilko and Poundland. We are fully aware of the positive impact on visitors to the town that Primark will bring which will have added benefits for all retailers in the town.

“We see the development of the town centre into a sub-regional centre as a key part of our long term vision for Burnley. That is why we have not only supported this development but also jointly invested over £3 million with Lancashire County Council into improving public realm in the town as well as removing the redundant former cinema block, open market and ramp adjoining the market square which will be demolished in the next 12 months.”

Councillor Sue Graham, executive member for regeneration and economic development, said: “It’s great news that Primark has decided to come to Burnley. Its addition to our town centre offer will have a major impact on the town and we look forward to the store opening, which we understand will be before Christmas next year. This move demonstrates real confidence in Burnley.”

Alex Wagstaff, partner at Addington Capital, described how the announcement represents the culmination of long-term behind the scenes negotiations. “We have kept an ongoing dialogue with Primark since we took ownership of the centre. This has always been a target retailer for us, so we are delighted we can now offer them suitable premises.  Primark is one of the leading retailers on the high street in the UK and securing them in Burnley for the long term is great news for the town centre.”
