Prairie Sports Village Burnley: Fab food and a fun-filled day for families

Prairie Sports Village has undergone a huge refurb of their bar and restaurant, with more than £80,000 spent on upgrading the interior and hospitality facilities.

Burnley.co.uk headed to the 1955 Kitchen & Bar this week to grab some lunch and it was absolutely delicious. We ordered the salt and pepper tempura king prawns for starters, served with a sriracha mayo. It came on a bed of fresh vegetables and was the perfect start to lunch. For mains, we went for the prawn, white bean and chorizo salad on a garlic bruschetta, which was huge. We added some aspen fries, a firm favourite and chips are allowed if you’ve had a salad for mains, right?

We had eyed up desserts such as the sticky toffee pudding and white chocolate tart served with raspberry sorbet, honeycomb and fruit textures, but we had to admit defeat. Next time.

We dined with burnley.social, so keep your eyes peeled for their write up, as they chose The Ultimate Toptracer burger for their main. It was piled high and came with French fries, crunchy coleslaw and beer battered onion rings.

You can view the breakfast, lunch and children’s menus on their website and the prices are incredibly reasonable considering the portions are huge. Did you know that Burnley Leisure, which is behind the 1955 Kitchen & Bar, is a charity? When you spend money here, it is reinvested into Burnley, from stroke and cardiac rehabilitation to swimming lessons for children.

We also like that the cooking oil is turned into green energy and biodiesel – we love it when things are kept as local and environmentally friendly as possible. Burnley Leisure are also behind Towneley 197 Bistro & Bar and The Boathouse Café at Thompson Park, both of which are beautiful locations.

After our lunch, the manager Wesley Kellow took us on a tour of the facilities. It was great to see the venue was busy, with everyone from groups of friends to families. For something fun to do with children during the summer holidays, crazy golf is always a firm favourite. There is also a two-storey driving range that is suitable for all ages. Large screens have been installed next to each section and you can set up different games for everyone to enjoy. We had a go at the fishing game, where the distance you hit the ball dictates what you “catch”. We managed to get an old boot, but it’s the taking part that counts! The technology also allows you to virtually play on some of the top courses in the world, all right here in Burnley.

Outdoors tables have also been installed and 1955 are about to launch table service for those on the driving range. This is a great idea. You can see the different hire prices here. We also like the idea that you can eat and drink outside, for those of you who would prefer to do so.

Children also eat half price in the restaurant when dining with an adult and all children’s mains come with a free ice cream sundae. This means that if you were to take advantage of their half price offer, a children’s meal and dessert would cost just £3.

A big thank you to 1955 for our delicious lunch and allowing us to have a look round the facilities and we can certainly recommend Prairie Sports Village for an enjoyable day out.
