Simply Classic, based at Shuttleworth Mead in Padiham, is providing up to 3,000 packed lunches a week for children in East Lancashire, all at cost price.
The business, which includes a 90-seater bistro, contract catering, vending and outside careering, is using the kitchen at UCLan’s Victoria Mill to prepare, pack and dispatch thousands of meals for children as part of the Burnley Holiday Activities and Food Programme (HAF) 2021.
Chris Burt, who runs the business with his partner Sally and her sister Joanne, told Burnley.co.uk: “The initiative helps to ensure that any child who may go hungry during the summer holidays has a nutritionally balanced meal. The operation is huge, we’re creating the packed lunches from the kitchen of UCLan’s Victoria Mill, and we really appreciate their support with lending us their impressive facilities.
“Simply Classic is providing these lunches at cost, it’s a project that’s really important to us and we’re glad to be of assistance.”
And it’s a family effort, with Chris and Sally’s children James, 12, and Lewis, 10, also helping out.
The HAF programme is funded by the Department for Education provides free meals and activities for eligible free school meal children across Burnley during the school holidays.
This year there will be whole host of activity clubs in Burnley, offering a range of energetic physical activities, exciting new experiences and loads of virtual online fun too.
Lynne Blackburn, director and project manager at Burnley Bondholder The Participation Works NW, has coordinated the initiative alongside Burnley Council. Simply Classic were originally asked to support children in Burnley, but this soon expanded across East Lancashire.
She told Burnley.co.uk: “Food was a big part of the funding outcome and providing healthy food for all young people who take part. We wanted to use a locally based company and Simply Classic was recommended. Chris has been brilliant and cannot do enough to support the project, the quality of the packed lunches he is providing is excellent and meets the School Food standard requirements, which enables every child to have a healthy lunch when taking part in the activities.”
A big thank you to Simply Classic, Participation Works NW, UCLan and Burnley Council for their support with HAF.
