136-bed student accommodation launches in Burnley

  • New student accommodation at Sandygate alongside the canal has launched
  • The first group of UCLan Burnley students will move in on Sunday (20th September)
  • The impressive facility has 136 beds, with all rooms en-suite
  • Marks a crucial milestone in UCLan’s plans to attract 4,000 students to Burnley by 2025

The first group of UCLan students are preparing to move into the new student accommodation at Sandygate this Sunday (20th September).

Last week, Burnley.co.uk provided a sneak preview of what the impressive 136-bed student accommodation looks like. All bedrooms have an en-suite, whilst the students also benefit from a hub, cinema room and study room – not to mention a canal-side location and views across to Pendle Hill.

The development was a joint venture between Barnfield Investment Properties and Burnley Council, which has now handed over the day-to-day running of the building to UCLan. The new accommodation is an important milestone in the university’s plans to attract 4,000 students to Burnley by 2025.

UCLan’s Michael Ahern, Chief Information and Infrastructure Officer, added: “It’s a really exciting day in the development of the University of Central Lancashire’s Burnley campus. This fantastic new accommodation facility is essential for building a university town which will attract a new generation of talent and enable us to recruit nationally and internationally.

“Crucial to our plans has been the first-class support and encouragement we’ve received from the entire Burnley community. By continuing to work together, meeting the existing and emerging skills needs of Burnley and East Lancashire, we can achieve our collective vision of driving prosperity and quality of life for the people of Burnley, Lancashire and the north west as a whole.”

The building wraps around Sandygate square and includes two A3 units, which are being marketed by Trevor Dawson. The students are in a prime location, close to both UCLan campuses at Victoria Mill and Princess Way, as well as the town centre.

Kate Ingram, Strategic Head of Economy and Growth at Burnley Council, said: “To have delivered this building in such a short time frame and in such difficult circumstances is extraordinary.  It is the first purpose-built student accommodation in the town, and we have deliberately set the bar high and I’m pleased with the results.  We have created a great student experience whilst respecting the historic canal-side setting”.

Tim Webber, Managing Director of Barnfield Construction, said “We are absolutely delighted to have delivered the high-quality project on time, despite the worldwide pandemic.

“We’re so proud of the hard work and unwavering effort and dedication the team have shown, to deliver what will be a fantastic addition to the projects already achieved, as part of the ongoing On The Banks development.”

A huge Burnley welcome to the new UCLan students – we hope you enjoy your time in the town and we look forward to seeing more students move in over the coming months.
