From the RAF to ethical care: how one Padiham man is on a mission

  • Ben Morton from Padiham set up To Me To You Support care agency with his mother following the death of his brother Oliver.
  • Oliver had special health needs and learning difficulties and sadly died aged 20 – spurring his family to set up a care agency that was ethical and understood the complex needs of vulnerable children and adults.
  • To Me To You Support has expanded from Blackburn into Bury and has plans to open in Burnley.
  • He exclusively told Burnley.co.uk: “We are always recruiting. If anyone has found themselves out of a job – especially as a result of COVID-19 – get in touch!

Ben Morton is a man on a mission. Following a five-year career with the RAF, he spent almost eight years commuting from his home in Padiham to large recruitment agencies in Leeds and Manchester.

However, he found the well-known recruitment giants lacked the personal touch, something which was important to Ben and his family due to the special health needs and learning difficulties his brother Oliver had.

Sadly, Oliver passed away in 2011 aged 20 from cardiac arrest and celebrating his life was the inspiration for Ben and his mother to set up To Me To You Support care agency.

“Our family understand how important it is to find fantastic support workers and carers that has the ethics and empathy to look after your loved ones. In 2017, we opened To Me To You Support in memory of Oliver and we talk about him every day to our staff, the care home managers we deal with and our vulnerable service users who our staff support.

“Oliver loved the Chuckle Brothers – we’ve found that a lot of people with autism and learning disabilities do. So that’s why we the agency is called what it is. He also loved traffic lights and would point them out to us all of the time and even cut pictures of them out of newspapers. That’s why we decided on traffic-light colours for our branding,” Ben explained to Burnley.co.uk.

The staff at To Me To You are, Ben believes, the best in the business. They are thoroughly vetted and paid more than the industry standard minimum wage, as Ben wants the care profession to be one that people aspire to make a difference in. The agency’s outstanding Google reviews and expansion plans mean they are constantly hiring.

“We are always recruiting. If anyone has found themselves out of a job – especially as a result of COVID-19 – get in touch!,” Ben urged.

The team at To Me To You Support

The reputation of the agency is so highly regarded that it was the only care agency that received approval to send care staff to the NHS COVID-19 Nightingale unit established in Bury. And it made such a good impression on staff and partners that it has recently opened an office in Bury to meet demand for its services across all of Greater Manchester.

“We had also planned to open an office in Burnley later this year, but COVID-19 and the subsequent demand in Bury has pushed these plans back. It looks like we will open in Burnley during the first half of 2021,” Ben said.

The Burnley office will be centrally located and initially have around four members of staff working there, before recruiting between 50-70 care workers to join the team.

So what is Ben looking forward to the most about working in Burnley?

“We really wanted to add to the Burnley economy, having grown up and now living here with my wife and two children (their son is named Olly after Ben’s brother). You can see small businesses thriving, with Burnley people down to earth and hard working.

“You can feel lost in a city, whereas there’s a real community spirit here. People are happy to go the extra mile to help others and you feel like you’re truly making a difference.” To Me To You provides services for vulnerable service users aged 9 to 99 in Greater Manchester and nearby locations such as Burnley, Blackburn, Nelson and Accrington. Its stringently-vetted employees work in settings such as care homes, assisted living facilities and children’s homes.
